Design Studio. Workshop. Collaborative Idea-Generating Playground.
Situated in a brick warehouse in the heart of San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District, the Rebar studio includes more than 5,000 square feet of design and workshop space. On any given day, you will find us discussing new ideas in the design studio, developing scale models in the project space, and designing full-scale prototypes in the metal and woodworking shop. We believe in a keeping short distance between thinking and making, and that often the perfect design solution will come to mind while we’re working at the drill press.
In our design studio, where the pen is at least as mighty as the pixel, we utilize the latest digital technology for CAD and 3D computer modeling as well as tried-and-true analog design tools. Downstairs in the project space we build scale models in wood, metal, foam, clay, wire, plastics and just about anything else we can get our hands on. We use the wood and metal fabrication shop primarily for prototyping designs, though we have been known to use it to make the occasional large scale steel sculpture.
The Rebar studio and workshop is capable of conceptual, schematic, and construction stage documentation, modeling with a variety of scales and materials, rapid full-scale prototyping, and just about everything in between. The combined studio and shop workspace supports a robust design process that integrates idea development with material experimentation, and leaves us with ample space to think, and space to make.
